septilin tablets Raw milk is milk that hasn’t been pasteurised, the process by which milk is heated to ensure that it doesn’t contain any harmful bugs. As a result, there is a small risk that it could contain dangerous bacteria such as salmonella, campylobacter, listeria and E. coli, which can cause diarrhoea, sickness and vomiting and, less commonly, severe conditions such as kidney failure, paralysis and even death. The seriousness of the illness is determined by several factors including the type of bacteria, the amount of contamination and an individual’s immune defences. Some people are at higher risk of food-borne illnesses – infants, young children, pregnant women, the elderly and those with weakened immune systems (for example people with cancer and HIV). These groups would be strongly advised not to consume raw milk.
